About Us

In early 2026, the Student Engagement Committee (which started with Danielle Brady, Jill Davis-Steele, Dylan Henderson, Sarah-Marie Horning, and Elliott Jacobson) was looking for ways to encourage students and reward good writing.

With that goal in mind, the committee launched The Texan Writer, a literary journal dedicated to the essays, articles, and letters written by students for the Department of English and Languages.

The first issue of The Texan Writer appeared in late spring 2026.

The journal is now published twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.

In some ways, The Texan Writer is a spiritual successor to the collections of student writing published by Dr. Randy Popken: The Tarleton Freshman Writer, The Tarleton Writer, and The Popken Writer.

Though Dr. Popken passed away in 2005, his influence is still felt.

About the author

The Texan Writer was launched in the spring of 2026 by four professors in North Texas. By publishing some of the strong writing being produced at their university, specifically in the Department of English and Languages, they hope to encourage and reward their university’s student body. They are currently seeking submissions for upcoming issues, the deadlines for The Texan Writer being March 31st for the spring issue and October 31st for the fall.
