Guidelines

The Texan Writer is seeking essays and articles written by students for the Department of English and Languages.

Any type of essay or article is welcome, including argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.

Submissions should be well written, original, and distinctive, but if revisions are necessary, the editors are happy to assist contributors with their work.

Preference will be given to essays under 5,000 words, but The Texan Writer will consider longer essays.

Creative writing, however, whether poetry or prose, should be submitted to The Bosque River Review, another literary journal produced by the Department of English and Languages.

Works written by artificial intelligence should be submitted elsewhere.

The Texan Writer does not pay for submissions, but each published contributor will receive two copies of the journal.

“Come to it any way but lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come lightly to the blank page.”

About the author

The Texan Writer was launched in the spring of 2026 by four professors in North Texas. By publishing some of the strong writing being produced at their university, specifically in the Department of English and Languages, they hope to encourage and reward their university’s student body. They are currently seeking submissions for upcoming issues, the deadlines for The Texan Writer being March 31st for the spring issue and October 31st for the fall.
