About Us

In early 2026, the Student Engagement Committee (which started with Danielle Brady, Jill Davis-Steele, Dylan Henderson, Sarah-Marie Horning, and Elliott Jacobson) was looking for ways to encourage and reward good writing at Tarleton.

With that goal in mind, the committee launched The Texan Writer, a literary journal dedicated to the essays, articles, and letters written by Tarleton students.

The first issue of The Texan Writer will appear in late spring 2026.

After that, it will be published twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.

In some ways, The Texan Writer will be a spiritual successor to the collections of student writing published by Dr. Randy Popken: The Tarleton Freshman Writer, The Tarleton Writer, and The Popken Writer.

Though Dr. Popken passed away in 2005, his influence is still felt.

About the author

The Texan Writer was launched in the spring of 2026 by four professors at Tarleton State University. By publishing some of the strong writing being produced in English classes at Tarleton, they hope to encourage and reward the university’s student body. With that goal in mind, they are currently seeking submissions for the first issue, which will appear in April 2026.
