Guidelines

The Texan Writer is seeking essays and articles written by students at Tarleton State University.

Any type of essay or article is welcome, including argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.

Submissions should be well written, original, and distinctive, but if revisions are necessary, the editors are happy to assist contributors with their work.

Preference will be given to essays under 3,000 words, but The Texan Writer will consider longer essays.

Creative writing, however, whether poetry or prose, should be submitted to The Bosque River Review, another literary journal produced by the English department at Tarleton.

Works written by artificial intelligence should be submitted elsewhere.

The Texan Writer does not pay for submissions, but each published contributor will receive two copies of the journal.

“Come to it any way but lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come lightly to the blank page.”

About the author

The Texan Writer was launched in the spring of 2026 by four professors at Tarleton State University. By publishing some of the strong writing being produced in English classes at Tarleton, they hope to encourage and reward the university’s student body. With that goal in mind, they are currently seeking submissions for the first issue, which will appear in April 2026.
